The orphanage was incredibly quiet at this time of night. Everyone was asleep and that included the nuns, so of course that meant Bethebel had to be careful tiptoeing past them. The wooden floors creaked ominously as she swept past; though she had excuses ready should anyone wake, she was aware that she risked a beating.

She didn't care. There was something downstairs she wanted to do and she could only do it while the noro were all asleep.

And so any who find themselves in this corner of the Nexus will find a frizzy-haired girl, huddling in a room with a single candle lit, looking at a book. Its been slow, slow, slow work, but--she thinks she's starting to get the reading down.

Ami had been reading. She was getting to used to not getting far in that; there always seemed to be some interruption or other.

This time, it was an interruption that made her immediately cautious. She was definitely not here a moment ago, and she was definitely wary of however she had suddenly gotten here.

The only person she saw was a little girl, reading a book. Nothing dangerous in that, which of course made her prudent enough to be suspicious when the circumstances were already so strange.

Then she realized she knew the girl, and her posture relaxed as a smile relieved her face. "Bethebel-chan?" the name came out as a question, but what she said next was definitely assured: "I'm glad to see you again."

Ami, veteran of plenty of nights staying up later than she should have in order to read, lowered her voice at once. She didn't chide Bethebel for sharing that particular hobby, either.

"I won't wake anyone up," she promised quietly, and she turned to the far more important topic: "What were you reading?"

"Shall we try it together, then?" Ami gave Bethebel a quick smile. "If you put out your candle, we can use a flashlight." At least, the tiny one she had on a keyring (it helped to be prepared).

"It's this." Ami takes out the keychain, which has a small cylinder attached, widened at the far end. She presses a button, and the light turns on.

"This way, we won't have to use up a candle," she says.

"It's like a lantern," Ami explains, "but it runs on its own power supply." She opens the tiny panel covering the batteries, and shows those, too.

She considers leaving the flashlight with the little girl, but without extra batteries it would only be useful for a few hours. Maybe if they meet again sometime. She decides to keep a few extras with her for awhile once she goes home. Just in case.

"Do you think they have," the correction was offhand, automatic.

"I couldn't say," Ami admitted. She'd never been there, or even heard of the place. Still, if the little girl found it a marvel, it was safe to say flashlights weren't common in this world. "Maybe not," she decided.
